Skin Deep Review Tour – Kailin Odel Character Profile

SD Tour BannerELIZA DUSHKU as Kailin

Eliza Dushku is my inspiration for Kailin Odel, from both Buffy and Angel days and a little of her Tru Calling character. She’s feisty, stubborn, bad-ass as it gets and that’s what I love about Kailin. Kailin is carrying a deep emotional pain (her mother abandoned her and her family when Kailin was two). In the leadup to Skin Deep and through the story Kailin is trying to deal with this abandonment and the ramifications of her mother’s absence in her life. All Kailin ever wanted was to be loved- something that’s hard to get from a father who still nurses the hurt of his wife’s departure.

Kailin is a complex character. She wants to be strong and yet she desperately need to be taken care of. She wants her independence but she longs for her family’s involvement in her life. She falls into Wraith hunting when she arrives in Chicago and discovers she has the ability to see track the soul-sucking monsters by the coral residue they leave behind. She watches and learns and soon knows how to fight them how to kill them. She’s a shifter on a monster hunting mission.

And the only person who’s been able to throw her for a loop is the oh-so-sexy Logan Westin. He’s so wrong for her – he’s Human and he’s a cop, two superb reason she should run as far as her panther legs can carry her. But the attraction is intense, and the two are on a course for a sizzling head-on collision.

Join Kailin as she hunts down a vicious killer, as she gets closer and closer to the truth about her mother, and as she tries to learn do whats always been the hardest…trust.

“T.G. Ayer has written a fantastic novel, created a fabulous world with great characters. I’m definitely looking forward to the second book in this series, because the story isn’t done yet. There is more to tell and I really need the next book to see how it will turn out…”

“You work very hard to protect humans—why is that so important to you?

Humans are weak—and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. They are just vulnerable and they need someone to look out for them. Also, discovering the wraiths was one thing, but seeing them prey on humans who couldn’t fight back? That just pissed me off, you know? I just couldn’t leave them unprotected.

You sound like Syd and her sense of responsibility.”

“T.G. Ayer has once again sucked me in to one of her magical worlds. A world where panther shape-shifter Kailin Odel, does her best to protect her community from soul sucking Wraiths; a world where shape-shifters, mage’s, and all manner of old and new paranormal beings live amongst us in relative secrecy. But someone is killing shifters, decimating the bodies and drawing attention to a world the Para’s want to keep secret; need to keep hidden from the regular population.”

New novel, Valkyrie series update & tour, Skin Deep release date & tour!

If you are familiar with authors you will know that many a manuscript lies in that special drawer (or folder) collecting the dust of doubt and the lack of belief. It’s no surprise that writers can lack a lot in the self-esteem department. Often it will take just one comment to sway your entire purpose. So I have this drawer just like all my other author buddies. And like many of them, although I loved the novel, I wasn’t sure that people would be interested in reading it. This, compounded by numerous agent rejections for Skin Deep, let me to place this novel in the ‘The virtual Drawer” consigned to collecting the dust of the years.

But something changed (Don’t bother asking me what changed- I’m still trying to figure that out myself!)

I pulled the files out from folders that are no longer even in use, opened it up and skimmed a bit. It was only when I felt myself needing to read more that I realised the story had a life all of its own. And I had to force myself to close the file even though I kept wanting to read more (Fire edits are priority today)… I remembered how much I loved the characters, how much I loved writing this book, and I realised that with a little editing this could be another book that will shine.

So, even though I’m probably insane for adding another project into my already insane schedule, I guess I am giving in…

You can look out for The Seals of Hades, later in 2013.

The Seals of Hades

Book 1 in the Chronicles of the Irin

In a world where mythological beings exist side by side, the Brotherhood of the Irin recruits winged beings from around the world. Valkyries, Angels, Faerie and Apsara’s work together to fight evil and guard the portals to the Underworlds, keeping human Earth safe.
Angel Evangeline is the strongest, most loyal Warrior of the Irin. When the brotherhood’s actions cause Evie to question their motives, her first duty is to protect the Twelve Seals of Hades. But as usual Evie gets more than she bargains for and sets off a chain of events that plunges her into the Underworld, brings her face to face with her haunted past, and throws her straight into the arms of Hades.
A rich world filled with demons and angels, faerie and immortals. An intriguing blend of Myth and legend that will satisfy your Urban Fantasy reading needs… PS. There’s a demon in this book that I really adore- when  you read the story you will totally know what I mean..

Writing Quirks and Must Haves

Until I thought about it I hadn’t realised that I do have a few ‘writing quirks’. Amazing what you figure out when you are forced to examine your process.

To start off with, I always need a good pen- my favourites is a LAMY Ballpoint – a gift from my dear friend Kim.

Because I am so easily distracted by emails, the Facebook and the Twitter, I prefer to go through them before I start writing, otherwise it will just bug me and mess with my concentration.

Part of my routine is to chat with my 2 writing buddies Patti and Cassie- we chat several times a day every day on Skype- have word wars and sometimes do butt-kicking duty

I must have my chap-stick right beside my keyboard; I hate having to get up and go look for it. – No, I’m not lazy, just focused!
A bottle of water- absolutely necessary. Gotta rehydrate people! Well, to be honest if I don’t have the bottle right in front of me, I will forget to drink water too- yup, its that bad!

I usually make my lunch when I prepare the family lunches every morning. So it’s all wrapped and ready to eat when lunchtime comes around. If I have to do more than unwrap and chew then I get annoyed and might not eat lunch at all- which is definitely a bad thing.

A pair of fingerless gloves in winter.

Writing music- During the day, when the house is empty I write without music, unless the neighbours are yelling or annoying me with their own loud music or screaming kids. Then I use my music to drown them out. Once my girls are home, and because my ‘study’ is located in my lounge, I drown out extraneous sounds by sticking my earphones in my ears. Of course, when I am writing an intensive action or emotional scene I listen to Linkin Park or Daughtry or Melody Gardot- whatever suits the scene.

Editing music –  When I am editing, my music preference is different. When I first started writing I used to listen to a playlist of all the Coldplay CD’s I owned. Now, for some reason, I always use that CD to edit to. It’s calming, and not intrusive enough to mess with my concentration while I edit.

I don’t snack while I write, amazing ideas come to me in the shower and I have an aversion to my treadmill which happens to occupy space in my study and which I just happen to not use on a daily basis. And that’s it as far as I can think of.
