I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves – it works wonderfully…
My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Book 5 in the Valkyrie series releasing early 2015Ragnarok is upon the worlds, and the time to fight is now. They come from all of the Nine Realms. Dark Elves, Dragons, Frost Giants, Elves … They all come to fight for Odin. And they answer to Valkyrie Brynhildr. Tricked by Loki, Bryn is now imprisoned and finding a way out is harder than it seems. Time is running out for those who fight for Odin and while Aidan’s absence is felt by all, Bryn and her team know there is no time to waste. But Bryn is determined to find him, and stop him using every means necessary. From poisoned water to black goo, to an electronically monitored Bifrost, Bryn will use all the tricks up her sleeves to save Odin and the Nine Realms. The war is nature and there is disaster all across the Nine Realms. Ragnarok is here …In this, the 5th, and final, exhilarating installment in the Valkyrie series, Bryn takes on Loki with her eye on bringing him to the Vigrid Plains, the site of the final battle of Ragnarok. From all across the world, Bryn and all her teams do all they can, battling naturals disasters and murderous attackers to prevent the end of the world.
Since the release of Dead Chaos I have been inundated with emails and PMs asking if there was going to be another book. Of course, there were many incomplete story threads and that was exactly what I’d intended.
My original plan was to continue Bryn’s adventures with a second trilogy called Ragnarok, a upper YA or NA Urban Fantasy style series which follows Bryn and her team as they fight Loki and his henchman all across Midgard. But after thinking about it I decided to end the series with Dead Silence, which is what I’ve been saying, and intending to do these past few months. The only problem is while plotting Dead Silence it was very clear to me that one book would not be enough to complete the whole story arc or round off all the smaller threads. It’s just way too much.
So, in the end I decided to add two more books to the series. They will be older with a little more heat, and a little more violence, but I think it’s a suitable continuation from DC. After some discussion with my fabulous crit partners I decided that Book 4 will be called Dead Wrath, while the final book will be Dead Silence.
Currently, I am hoping to have DEAD WRATH released but the end of November. Expect to see the final book around May 2015.
Sometimes its not easy when all the planning and best intentions in the world won’t make stories and characters do what they are told. That’s when you just have to shut up and listen to the voices I guess – how’s that for finding out who is truly in control…
So there you have it. Now you can look forward to 2 more books in the Valkyrie series.

Ok, so I thought I would update you lovely people on where I am at on the cover of DEAD CHAOS. You’re probably thinking I’ve been way too busy with birthdays and birthday cake not to mention writing LOST SOUL (and you’re probably right) but here is a teaser to tide you over.
So at last it’s COVER REVEAL time for FIRE… Hope you like it as much as I do 🙂
Normal people sneak out to a party and have fun. Maya Rao ends the evening by incinerating the guy who attacks her.
Nik Lucas, sexy, new in town and totally forbidden, happens to walk in on her. Normal guys would run for the hills. Nik knows a whole lot more than he’s telling.
Maya doesn’t believe the gods are real, doesn’t waste her time with mere mythology. But when gods, demons and hellhound’s become the new normal and wielding fire becomes her new skill, she must decide what it is she really believes.
Can Maya accept that normal is something she will never be because it isn’t normal to be
…the Hand of Kali.
The cover for DEAD EMBERS (Book 2 in the Valkyrie series) is done and I couldn’t find a single reason to delay the reveal. So here it is:
a Valkyrie Novel #2
Isn’t she lovely? My amazingly fabulous cover artist Eduardo Daniel Priego who can be found here on DeviantArt. And again the cover features the sword ‘The Viking’ created by the talented team at Darksword Armory. Thanks again guys for allowing me to use this amazing piece. You can find Darkword Armory here.
In the sequel to DEAD RADIANCE Bryn continues her education in the art of being a Valkyrie. It doesn’t help that though Aidan still needs saving, Bryn has to focus her attention on performing her duty as one of Odin’s Valkyrie. When new warrior recruits begin dying under mysterious circumstances, Bryn, Fenrir and the team have to figure out who is targeting Odin’s great army and why. Will Bryn find the truth in time? And this time will she save Aidan?
I had an interesting experience last weekend that was a sorta affirmation, kinda exhilaration and a whole lotta book-love. And it got me thinking about why I write, what it is about writing that truly satisfies me.
I had what I called a fan-date. And, mind you, it all happened because of One Direction (you know.. the boy band all the girls are crazy for) okay, moving on. Cath aka BookChatterCath and her mom loved DEAD RADIANCE so we met for coffee. Also, since I’m sneak this way, I arranged for a little surprise. Knowing that Cath absolutely loved Melissa Pearl, author of the Time Spirit Trilogy, I got Mel to join us and kept it secret until the day. Don’t we all love yelling SURPRISE!
We had such an awesome time. What lovely ladies! And we just couldn’t stop talking. And Cath was wearing Bryn’s necklace, well Cath’s replica of Bryn’s necklace. Well… you know what I mean. Anyway, when I finally noticed I about fell off my seat- so cool! And just between you and me, the whole experience had me a little off kilter too (picture me ordering a macchiato instead of a mochachino- yup, not a mistake you want to make when warm, chocolatey coffee is what you want, but you end up with a thimble sized cup of coffee strong enough to have you buzzing for 24 hours straight) Yeah, I hear you laugh… you can stop now thank you 🙂
To me, this is what it’s all about. Not the fandom and the accolades but the little humble fact that someone enjoyed my book. Enough to want to meet me and talk about it. To tell me how much they loved it. To talk about things in the the book that made me sit back in a little daze because I just wrote the book for people to read it. I didn’t really sit there thinking ‘So when someone decides to talk about this book, what will they say?’ Needless to say I was floored.
And honestly, I want to be able to always do this. What better way to experience the happiness we, as authors, give to our readers than to meet them and talk to them in person. Loved it.
If anything this experience was a key factor in getting me back on track with edits and writing and planning. It was my Red Bull, my adrenalin, my sugar rush- okay before I begin to crave chocolate again lets move on.
I’m editing DEAD EMBERS at the moment, and preparing to edit SECOND SKIN. Both books are releasing at the end of August 2012. It’s double the excitement double the fun I tell you!
I’m also still waiting on entries in the Bryn’s Necklace Competition- go here for details and enter at your leisure…
In the meantime- something special – a Sneak Preview of the cover of DEAD EMBERS!!
And a little Excerpt too- just because 🙂
Book 2 in the Valkyrie Series
Cold burrowed into my knees, digging icy claws deep into bone. Despite the pain, I didn’t move. I knelt on the white marble floor of Odin’s Hall, time suspended in a maelstrom of seconds and minutes and unshed tears.
My gaze lay fixed, unblinking, on the bright red of Aidan’s blood. Slick blood dripped from my quivering hands, warm and sticky, like honey. Yet there was nothing sweet or pleasant about having the warm ruby liquid seep into the whorls of my fingers, and stain my hands and my clothing.
The sounds of the Great Hall simmered around me, fading into the shadows of my despair. Only the rabid cackle of Loki’s laughter filtered through my sorrow. The rattle of his chains echoed in my ears as Fenrir dragged him away….
Most writers picture what their covers would look like once their little baby is all published and being read by their eager fans. I’m also a fan of covers, actually. One of the things I do after I’ve drawn up my plan for the novel is to throw together a little cover created on GIMP. Some of them are ridiculously hideous and for my eyes only. They do help me though. That inspirational cover allowed me to solidify my goal – a completed novel. I don’t waste too much time on it though. One does not want to spend weeks finicking with a cover instead of actually writing ones book, does one? 😉
Anyway, moving on, my cover : here it is!
DEAD RADIANCE – front cover :
This amazing piece of art was created for me by the super-talented young Eduardo Daniel Priego who can be found here at DeviantArt. Cover titles by the fabulous Stephanie Mooney who can be found here.
I have to say that I love that sword. I want that sword… sigh! I’m so grateful to Darksword Armory for allowing me to use their piece ‘The Viking’ for the cover. They can be found here.
And the full cover :
DEAD RADIANCE will be available online from 25th FEBRUARY 2012
It has all the elements of a perfect cover for Syd’s second story. I love the pentagram! The eye is mysterious and sexy without being creepy. The colours are simply HOT, and suits the way Patti kicks the heat up a notch FAMILY MAGIC, the first book in the series.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
This book is pure art. I have the hardcover version and I have to say there is nothing quite like holding a piece of art in your hands!
